Covey Gong creates works invested in the narratives and history that materials accrue through time and use. Tracing these axes of associative meaning, Gong examines methods of material sublimation, by which the fragile and frail can appear solid, the rigid, supple, or the weightless, weighty. Through these interventions, Gong reifies the changes objects cultivate through acclimation. Gong’s works often recall familiar subjects: a garment to wear, a tool to use, or a place to live, however they rarely rest on one reading, exploring a reality in which a subject can be produced at the margins of perception.
