Lives and works in New York
Andy Meerow’s artworks interrogate tensions between legibility and abstraction, originality and derivation, elegance and crudeness. He works primarily with found texts and images, often pointing to the ways fine art vocabularies are repurposed by everyday commerce, and vice versa, resulting in a critical yet humorous flattening of high and low content. The diptych, with its inherent bifurcation of the picture plane, is a primary device for describing these tensions. The juxtaposition of one panel with another implies modularity and enacts a conflict. Through this frequent reorientation and reshuffling, Meerow undercuts his own intentionality and destabilizes meaning. Instead, he opts for an openness which calls to mind the urban landscape, that unreliable muse which suspends us among codified messages abundant beyond navigation.
