Gene Beery (1937–2023) mingled mystic truths with mortal musings in a painting practice that spanned more than half a century. His "UNIVERSAL CALENDAR"—most likely produced in the fall of 2008—foregrounds his domestically outré photography habit. The calendar was originally shared with friends and family, and produced at the local Sutter Creek copy shop where he also made remarkable artists' books, holiday cards, and more. Above the fold, each month features a congenially batty portrait of the artist, while below is a blank grid—nude as the news, and totally absent letters and numbers. The "UNIVERSAL CALENDAR" is therefore universally accurate – good in each and every year, frame of mind, and season of the heart. Fill in the blanks or dig into the void – there is no wrong answer (save for not buying this calendar!).
Beery originally mailed his "Universal Calendar" to family and friends at some point after September 2008. In honor of his life and work it was reprinted by Cushion Works, San Francisco, in 2024. It is good in any year.
